Faucet Buying Guide Los Angeles

What makes a Faucet a Faucet?

HANDLE / CONTROLS

A Faucet always has a Handle, a Spout and a sometimes a Sprayer. The Handle options for a faucet can be single, double, touchless and touch-on.  Single and Double Handle faucets are common, most companies will have plenty of options you can choose from.
  • Single : One handle that controls both hot and cold water temperature while being able to adjust the amount of water flow.
  • Double: Two handles that can control and adjust the amount of water flow on each side, each handle controls one type of temperature either hot or cold.
  • Touchless: These types of faucets work with sensors on the body of the faucet to respond to motion and sound to turn on without touching it. They can be powered by electricity or batteries. The temperature is controlled either on the faucet or under the sink.
  • Touch-On: These types of faucets work with sensors on the body of the faucet to respond to touch, or if your hands come within inches of the spout the water will start to flow. They can be powered by electricity or batteries. The temperature is controlled either on the faucet or under the sink.

SPOUT AND BODY

The spout is where the water pours out of your faucet. The body of the faucet is the design element for your space but its function is specific to the kind of sink you have installed.
  • Standard Spout and Body: These are most common in apartments or budget remodels because they are compact and inexpensive. They rise only a little from the faucets base and do not have sprayer accessories.
  • Gooseneck Faucet: These type of faucets can swivel 180 degrees and have a high rise faucet neck that allows large pots to be filled with water conveniently but can cause splashing if your sink is too shallow. Choose a Faucet that is proportional to your sink, a large sink looks odd if you've chosen a small faucet. Most modern Gooseneck Faucets all have retractable sprays that are attached to the faucets spout.

SPRAYER

Sprayers used to be considered an extra feature but nowadays most modern kitchen faucets all have a sprayer head attached to the spout to pull down or pull out. Some also have a sprayer attachment that can be installed off to the side on the sink apron.

Consider this before buying a New Faucet:

SINK HOLES

Most modern sinks have a pre-drilled holes already made. If your buying a new Sink, make sure to count the mounting holes and the distance between them before choosing a faucet. If your using your existing Sink, make sure to check how many holes you have and the distance between them before you buy a new Faucet. It is never a good idea to try and drill additional holes in your sink to accommodate for a new Faucet.
  • No Holes: Counter or wall mount sink faucets work with sinks that have no pre-drilled holes. Holes are drilled in the countertop by the counter fabricator or builder.
  • One Hole: Sinks that have only one hole use a faucet that has controls, sprayers and handles on the faucet body.
  • Two Hole:  Sinks with two holes use a faucet that has controls and handles on the faucet body. The second hole is used for the sprayer technology and/or the soap dispenser.
  • Three and Four Hole: Sinks that have three holes pre-drilled is the most flexible option. You can use two handle faucets options or you can use a faucet that has controls and handles on the faucet body, any holes that are not used can be covered with a deck plate to camouflage the unnecessary holes.

MOUNTING STYLE

The mounting style is another important attribute to consider when remodeling your kitchen or bathroom. The Mounting options are Deck, Counter and Wall.
  • Deck or Counter Mount Faucet: These types of faucets attach to the countertop or sit on the sink itself. They sometimes have a plate that is attached to the faucet neck or handles.
  • Wall Mount Faucet: These types of faucets attach to the wall instead of the counter or the sink. Wall mount faucets give your kitchen a more professional or vintage feeling. These types of faucets usually cost more then the other options. The installation requires you to professionally install these vs doing it yourself. The wall mount faucet usually do not the sprayer function it is an accessory that will need to be installed on the countertop.

Types of Faucet Finishes to consider:

  1. Chrome: This finish is highly reflective and give your kitchen or bathroom a sleek appearance.
  2. Stainless Steel: This finish is a matte gently brushed metal.
  3. Nickel: This finish is a neutral warm tone compared to Stainless Steel.
  4. Bronze: This finish gives a more traditional appearance, warm but works well with both gray or taupe wall colors.
  5. Gold: This finish was very popular in the 1980's but it was bold, brassy and glossy. Gold is definitely a trend that has made its way back, but in a neutral way this time around. You can find champagne bronze to rose gold tones to give your room a unique look with a touch of luxury even in the simplest environment.
  6. Black: This finish goes well with almost anything. The matte finish complements a more modern look but works well with traditional looks.
  7. White: This finish is sleek and modern but can also be used in a vintage environment too.
