DIY: How to Clean your Garbage Disposal?

10/12/2013

Your Garbage Disposal is one of the most important tools you have in your Kitchen so make sure to regularly maintain it. Put as little grease down the Drain as you can; the grease can harden and give you a lot of problems in the long run; not to mention the nasty odor it can give off.

Garbage Disposal | Clean it Regularly

  1. Turn on the hot water for a few seconds, and then turn on your Garbage Disposal.
  2. Squeeze one tablespoon amount of dish washing liquid inside. (My favorite the original blue DAWN, it seems to break up oil and grease faster then anything I've ever tried.)
  3. Continue to run the hot water for 30 more seconds while your Garbage Disposal is still set to ON.
  4. Turn off Garbage Disposal but run hot water for one more minute, you want the suds (soap foam) gone.

Haven't Cleaned the Garbage Disposer in a while? Do you have a not so good Smell coming out of your Kitchen Drain?

  1. Pour 1 1/2 cup of baking soda down your Kitchen Drain.
  2. Slowly pour 1 cup of white vinegar down the Drain and close the opening with a Drain stopper (If you have a double Sink, make sure to place the Drain stopper to both Drains).
  3. Wait a few minutes (it should be fizzing and making noise)
  4. In the mean time boil about 10 cups of Water on your stove.
  5. Once you've boiled the Water, remove the drain stopper and pour the Hot Water down the Drain.

Garbage Disposal | Don't forget to Clean the Blades too

  1. Place a few small ice cubes in the Drain along with a few lemon peels (I use Ice Cubes made of Vinegar instead of just water).
  2. Turn on you Garbage Disposal for a few seconds.
** NOTE: Don’t place your hands in the Garbage Disposal until you have disconnected the power to it.
